A Childcare Formula That Works:

Affordable, high-quality childcare is crucial for moms and a thriving economy, but Ontario is falling behind. With funding cuts and waitlists growing, we need a better childcare funding formula to support families and workers alike.

Affordable, high-quality childcare is essential to a thriving economy, especially for moms. The Canada-Wide Early Learning and Child Care (CWELCC) program has made progress, but here in Ontario, we’re facing setbacks.

Provincial funding for childcare is decreasing, leaving too many moms stuck on waitlists with no end in sight.

Ontario has committed to creating 85,000 new childcare spaces by 2026. To make this happen, we need increased funding. While the new funding formula set to roll out in January 2025 addresses some challenges, it misses critical issues like fair pay for Early Childhood Educators (ECEs) and the impact of profit-making in childcare.

Right now, there are huge pay gaps between employers, and the new formula doesn’t guarantee fair wages for all childcare workers. To fix the workforce crisis and meet our childcare goals, Ontario needs a provincial wage grid to ensure decent pay and fair treatment for every ECE and childcare worker.

We need a funding formula that supports childcare centers, prevents closures, and creates accessible, high-quality spaces for families.
